Virgin Australia Velocity International Lounge Access Guide [2022]

ByKeith M. Jones

Airport lounges do all travel better, especially when traveling in premium or economy class – travel classes that do not include lounge access on the side of the ticket.

And as Australians continue to head overseas once again, Suite of Virgin Australia’s international partner airlines offers Velocity Frequent Flyer members – and Beyond members, of course – access to great lounges at airports around the world.

In most cases, Velocity Platinum and Velocity Gold members are also entitled to bring one guest (including a child) into the lounge if they are on the same flight.

Some of these arrangements have changed in recent months with the arrival of new partners such as United Airlines and Qatar Airways, while other airlines have updated their access agreements: here is a brief overview of access to Virgin Australia international lounges for Velocity frequent flyers.

Velocity Access to Singapore Airlines Lounges

Velocity Platinum and Gold members can expect to begin their Singapore Airlines flight at any Singapore Airlines SilverKris business class lounge except for SQ’s Changi T3 hub, where a dedicated KrisFlyer Gold lounge is reserved for frequent travelers.

It’s not the terrible KrisFlyer Gold lounge of years past – the newly built lounge is not only much bigger and more comfortable, it has improved dining area and even its own toilets and showers.

Fast access to Qatar Airways lounges

Gulf colossus Qatar Airways is Virgin’s newest partner, and QR’s Doha hub recently opened several dedicated frequent flyer lounges for its own Privilege Club members, as well as premium frequent flyers from partner airlines ranging from Virgin Australia to Qantas and other Oneworld airlines.

(That’s because Qatar Airways’ elegant Al Mourjan and Al Safwa First business lounges are primarily for the carrier’s first and business class passengers.)

Velocity Platinums should proceed to Qatar Airways Platinum Lounge South, while Golds can proceed directly to Qatar Airways Gold Lounge South – both lounges are located in Concourse A at Hamad International Airport.

The +1 guest arrangement can work very well here if you are Velocity Gold but your travel companion is Velocity Platinum, as the Qatar Airways Platinum Lounge is a cut above the Gold Lounge with a la carte dining and showers.

Qatar Airways also offers Premium Lounges at several international airports, including Singapore, Bangkok, London and Paris, but these are reserved for business and first-class travelers, not frequent flyers.

Velocity access to Etihad Airways lounges

Virgin’s second partner in the Gulf is Etihad Airways, which maintains a very reasonable policy that for Velocity Platinums and Golds, “lounge access is available…at all Etihad and third-party operated lounges”.

This includes contract lounges at airports where Etihad does not have its own lounges, such as Aspire’s The House in Sydney and Melbourne – which ironically were Etihad lounges when they first opened!

At Etihad T3 in Abu Dhabi residence, Velocity Platinums can spend the pre-flight hours in the Etihad First Class Lounge; Speed Gold medals are directed to the Etihad Business Class Lounge.

Velocity access to United Airlines lounges

Another new Virgin Australia partner, United Airlines is rolling out the welcome mat for Velocity Platinums and Golds (each with a guest in tow) in its United Club lounges, but there are some caveats here.

Your United flight must be “part of an international itinerary” – a stand-alone domestic leg will not qualify. For example, a flight from Sydney to San Francisco to Las Vegas would allow a Velocity Platinum or Gold member to use the United Club during that layover in San Francisco, but not if you only booked that San Fran to Vegas flight alone.

Of course, there’s no frequent flyer access to United’s premium Polaris lounges, which are reserved for business class travelers.

Additionally, the lounge must be owned and operated by United Airlines – partner or third-party “contracted” lounges do not come with Velocity access.

In the case of United Airlines flights departing from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, where United does not have its own lounges, Virgin Australia notes that Velocity Platinum and Gold members “may also have access to the Singapore Airlines lounge”.

Velocity Access to Air Canada Lounges

of the Virgin other The North American partner is Air Canada – another Star Alliance member of United – which has an extensive network of Maple Leaf Lounges across Canada and in a handful of international destinations including Los Angeles and New York, London, Paris and Frankfurt.

Velocity Platinum and Gold members accompanied by a guest child can visit the Maple Leaf Lounge before their flight with Air Canada.

(In common with United Airlines, Air Canada also has separate business class lounges, called Signature Suites, in Vancouver and Toronto.)

However, there is no Air Canada lounge in Sydney or Brisbane, with Virgin Australia noting that “no lounges are available” before these Air Canada flights for Velocity frequent flyers.

Velocity Access to Virgin Atlantic Lounges

The UK-based stablemate of Virgin Australia welcomes Velocity Platinum and Gold members (each with one guest) to its Clubhouse lounges.

An additional Platinum benefit is that Velocity Platinum members (albeit solo, non-guest) can also enter Virgin Atlantic’s Revivals Lounge upon arrival at London Heathrow Airport.

Velocity Access to South African Airlines Lounges

Velocity Platinums and Golds, each with a child or guest, can visit any South African Airways lounge prior to their SAA flight.
