New England is blessed with an embarrassment of wealth when it comes to the perfect weekend getaways. But that time of fall, when the leaves are turning and the days are (often) still nice and sunny, is a great time to head north to the White Mountains, especially the North Conway area, aka the do-it-yourself fall travel adventure. After all, where else can you summit Mount Washington on foot, by car, or by train? enjoy a gentle hike with the whole family; or just relax and crack open a frosty one while soaking up the foliage?

First of all: the great outdoors. There are endless hikes in the area, with a number of low impact choices close to town, including the rapid 1.3 mile Diane’s baths path, which culminates in a series of waterfalls; walks along the water at Echo Lake State Park; and the breathtaking view of the city at Cathedral Ledge State Park. On rainy days, or when looking to round off your eco-adventure with a little history, check out the Eastern Slope branch of the charming New England Ski Museum to start getting excited about your winter plans.

When you’re ready to gear up or relax after a day of action, you’ll find plenty of fuel. In the morning it’s hard to beat the breakfast sandwich from the Sunrise hut, which comes on a cushion bolo levedo (Portuguese English muffin), but the apple and cinnamon pancakes at Peach’s Restaurant come close. Snack time is all about the sweet treats from White Mountain Cupcakes, or ice cream in a micro-batch of The McKaella Candy Shop. Come and dine, you will find a wide range of options, from wood-fired pizzas to Flatbread company with tasty Korean barbecue tacos from Barley & Salt.

Of course, there is always a lot to celebrate this time of year. If you stop in North Conway on a weekend this month, your visit could coincide with the Mount Washington Valley Fall Craft Fair (October 2-3) or Crafts and artisans festival (October 9-10), both featuring the work of local designers. And don’t forget to consult the Tuckerman Brewing Company website for a live music calendar – the craft brewery puts on shows throughout the month, proving that here in the heart of the mountains, a good time is never far away.
